Annual Wild Blueberry Pancake Breakfast

Volunteers chip in with this November celebration-fundraiser by selling tickets, setting up, decorating, greeting, washing dishes, cleaning up, etc. Volunteers can also join the Breakfast planning committee from September to November. Students have found that the Breakfast Committee is a great way to learn about and get experience in event planning and coordination.

Run for Rights
The Run for Rights is a joint fundraiser for over a dozen charities from around the city, and one of the largest LITE events of the year. From February until June volunteers on the Run for Rights Committee plan the event, and our many volunteer runners enlist friends, family, and co-workers to sponsor them for the Run. And we always need many volunteers to take on jobs at the Run itself (race marshals, first aid, and the LITE table, for example).

Volunteer your professional services:

Would you like to donate your professional skills? At various times during the year we need assistance with graphic design, printing, web design, advertising, office supplies, and fundraising. We currently are also in need of someone for database design.

Presentations about LITE year-round:

Do you know of an individual or group that would like to learn more about LITE and community economic development (CED) in Winnipeg's inner city? You can arrange for a presentation by LITE staff or other volunteers. We do this any time of year, and especially Sept-Nov during our Fall Campaign. We also assist volunteers who would like to make a presentation about LITE. We make presentations to groups or individuals at:

  •      Businesses
  •      Workplaces
  •      Schools
  •      Churches
  •      Social clubs
  •      Unions

Thank you calls:

In January, June, and again in November, volunteers make hundreds of thank you calls to all of the LITE donors. Don’t worry, there is absolutely NO SOLICITING of funds involved! Thank you call parties are always a lot of fun (and there is always good food, too).

Good on the phone? Make someone's evening with a call to say thanks! Contact us...

Envelope stuffing parties

In early May and early October volunteers get together to stuff approximately 1000 envelopes for LITE mailings.

Interns:

Past interns, especially from Red River College and Menno Simons College, helped with planning and coordinating events, worked on researching, writing, editing, photography, and layout for LITE materials, worked with committees, and did any number of other projects in the office and community. Get in touch with us, and we'll do our best to match your skill set with our needs. There are also possibilities for interships through the University of Manitoba and the University of Winnipeg. A LITE internship is a great way to get experience in CED and the non-profit sector.

Fundraising committees:

Committees are a great way to join the community of volunteers dedicated to improving Winnipeg's inner-city through CED. (and the food is great!)

Public Relations Committee

This volunteer committee meets 4-8 times a year and is responsible for planning and carrying out LITE publicity strategies: posters, billboards, media coverage, press releases, visibility at events, posters, phone calls, etc…

Church Relations Committee

These volunteers meet 4-8 times a year and are responsible for coordinating LITE’s relations with existing and potential donor churches: CED/LITE presentations, fundraising events, information materials, volunteer coordination, sermons, strategy, etc… More donors hear about LITE through churches than through any other source.

Business Relations Committee

Volunteers on the Business Committee meet 4-8 times a year and are responsible for coordinating LITE’s relations with existing and potential donor businesses: CED/LITE presentations, fundraising events, information materials, strategy, etc…

Newsletter Committee

Between January and May, volunteers on the Newsletter Committee meet (2-3 times) to coordinate the writing, editing, photos, layout, and publishing of LITE’s yearly newsletter, featuring stories about events, partner projects, and volunteer involvement.

Join the Board

Do you have a long-term interest in Winnipeg's inner-city? LITE Board members take a very active role in the direction and administration of LITE’s activities. Board members serve for two-year terms (renewable). Besides directing the activity of the organisation in regular board meetings, members participate in committees, help with events, and might also serve as Chair/co-Chair, Secretary, or Treasurer to the board. Every year the Nominations Committee looks for people with a commitment to CED to replace outgoing members.

Volunteer perks:

Besides the satisfaction of taking part in events and productive committees or projects, volunteers won’t want to miss their own volunteer-appreciation party in March – but of course, we won’t ask for your help this time!
