Recent headlines have painted two very different pictures of Manitoba’s labour market.
On one hand, Manitoba continues to have one of the lowest unemployment rates in Canada (CTV News). The province continues to report strong employment numbers, suggesting that Manitoba’s labour market remains resilient compared to the rest of the country.
At the same time, many young Manitobans are experiencing something very different. A recent report highlighted youth who have applied to hundreds of jobs without receiving interviews or offers, despite actively searching for employment and wanting to enter the workforce (CBC News). For many young people, finding that first opportunity has become increasingly difficult, even while employers continue to report hiring needs.
What both of these developments clearly demonstrate is that unemployment rates do not tell the whole story.
While Manitoba’s overall employment numbers remain strong, ma
ny individuals continue to experience significant barriers that prevent them from accessing those opportunities. Limited work experience, transportation challenges, financial hardship, discrimination, language barriers, disability, and limited professional networks continue to affect who is able to secure meaningful employment.
We see these realities every day. Individuals are eager to work.
They are applying, interviewing, updating resumes, attending employment workshops, and doing everything they can to find opportunities. Yet many continue facing rejection after rejection, making it increasingly difficult to remain optimistic or financially stable.
For many Manitobans, unemployment is not simply about being without a job. It means worrying about how rent will be paid. It means choosing between transportation and groceries.
It means delaying educational goals, putting careers on hold, and carrying the emotional weight of feeling left behind despite making every effort to move forward.
These challenges are why LITE exists, and why we need your support.
Employment creates far more than income. It provides stability, independence, confidence, and opportunities for individuals and families to build stronger futures. When barriers prevent people from accessing employment, those impacts extend into every aspect of their lives.
While Manitoba’s labour market continues to perform well overall, many people still require support navigating pathways into meaningful employment. That gap between economic success and lived experience is where our work continues every day.
